The Reason to Live Foundation builds human development programmes for schools, churches, communities, and organisations across South Africa — because most of the damage done in a human life is the result of missing foundations, not bad character.
"Most of the damage done in a human life is not the result of bad character. It is the result of missing foundations."
The Reason to Live Foundation was established with one conviction: that a child who was never told they matter will spend their adult life seeking validation in places that cannot give it. A teenager who was never helped to understand their emotions will manage them through substances, aggression, or withdrawal.
Give people the right foundations at the right time, and they build differently. They parent differently. They lead differently. They treat each other differently. One equipped generation changes the next one.
We deliver human development programmes in schools, churches, workplaces, prisons, and communities — reaching every context where foundations were missed and restoration is possible.
A complete suite of ten human development programmes covering every major context, every age group, and every significant life season — all built on one unifying framework: the Three Mindsets.
A five-stage human development programme walking with a person from childhood to adulthood — covering identity, emotional intelligence, purpose, decision-making, and proactive living.
A scripture-backed marriage enrichment programme that equips couples to understand themselves and each other — healing inherited patterns and building new foundations together.
A scripture-based human development programme that bridges the gap between spiritual formation and practical inner transformation for congregations and discipleship streams.
Built on industrial psychology principles, SHIFT brings the Three Mindsets framework into the workplace — transforming how individuals think, lead, and perform under pressure.
A programme for anyone ready to rebuild — designed for the hardest contexts, meeting human beings wherever they are in their journey with grace and practical tools.
A comprehensive training manual that equips and commissions facilitators to deliver the RTL curriculum with excellence, consistency, and pastoral depth in any context.
Senior Pastor of Chosen Builders Ministries · Cape Town, South Africa · Originally from Dutywa, Eastern Cape
My name is Bathandwa Cwasi. I am the founder of the Reason to Live Foundation and the Senior Pastor of Chosen Builders Ministries in Cape Town.
I grew up in Dutywa in the Eastern Cape. I grew up without a father in the home. I navigated school without anyone helping me understand who I was, what I was feeling, or where I was going. I made choices in my teenage years from confusion rather than clarity.
For a long time I thought that was just my story. But when I began working with young people in schools and communities across the Western Cape, I realised it was almost everyone's story. Bright children, capable children, children full of potential — growing up without the inner foundations they needed to do something with that potential.
That is why I built this curriculum. Not from a textbook or a theory. From lived experience. From years of sitting with young people and watching what happened when someone finally gave a name to what they were carrying.
The Reason to Live Lifecycle Curriculum is the programme I wish had existed when I was nine years old. It is what I am now bringing to every school, every church, and every community that will open its doors to it.
Real people. Real transformation. These are the stories that remind us why the Reason to Live Foundation exists.
Before the programme, I didn't know who I was or where I was going. I was just reacting to life. After Stage 2, I had language for what I was feeling for the first time. I started making decisions from clarity instead of confusion. I went back to finish my matric. I now know I have a future.
I grew up without a father and I carried that wound into everything — my relationships, my work, my parenting. The ROOTS programme at our church gave me the tools to understand myself and break patterns I didn't even know I had. My marriage is different. I am different.
As a teacher, I have seen many programmes come and go. The Lifecycle Curriculum is different. It gives children language for what they are experiencing inside. I watched a child who never spoke open up in session three. That child had never been given permission to exist before. This programme gives permission.
These stories represent the heart of what RTL Foundation does every day. Real names and photos will be added as we gather testimonials from our programme participants. Do you have a story? Contact us — we'd love to hear it.
Real people. Real foundations. Real change. These are the voices of those who went through RTL Foundation programmes — replace these with your own stories as they come.
After going through the Lifecycle Curriculum at school, I finally understood why I was making the choices I was making. For the first time someone gave me language for what I was carrying inside. That changed everything for me.
I came to the ROOTED programme thinking our marriage just needed better communication. What I discovered was that I had never dealt with the foundations — identity, purpose, how I was raised to think about myself. ROOTED went to the root.
I always thought I was just reactive by nature. SHIFT showed me that reactivity is a trained pattern — and that it can be untrained. I lead my team differently now. I lead my family differently now.
